Midhope Castle is on a PRIVATE part of the Hopetoun Estate
Midhope Castle is located in open countryside about 10 miles west of Edinburgh. As there is no direct public transport to our location we strongly recommend travel by your own transport, taking an official tour which includes a visit to Midhope Castle, or walking via The John Muir Way long distance pathway.
If you decide to use UBER or a taxi service it is important you have your taxi/UBER wait for you while you visit as it is very difficult to order an UBER/taxi from the castle.
Important Information
MIDHOPE CASTLE VISITOR GUIDELINES
• Midhope Castle is not a visitor attraction and therefore has limited amenities. Toilets are available through the courtyard (no wheelchair acess) as well as a coffee cart.
• Whilst the exterior of the castle is intact and affords a photographic opportunity, the interior of the castle is derelict. The visitor experience is therefore limited and one room in the original 15th ventury tower house. Filming only took place in the courtyard and the surrounding area. Beyond the parking sign visitor access is only permitted by foot.
• Access may be restricted for safety reasons due to farming works, estate activities or large events taking place on the surrounding Estate. Please check the list of restricted dates on our website.
•The castle is short walk from the car park area but please be careful as the road and track is uneven and there is a hill to the castle. Please use the footpath from the car park to the gate. The castle courtyard is around 150m from the ticket office. As the castle is located on an access road to a working farm, work vehicles, lorries and agricultural machinery share the access road with pedestrians. For your personal safety please be vigilant at all times.
• Parking is only permitted in the designated visitor parking area. Please follow the instructions of any staff who are there for your safety.
• Visits are restricted to 5pm in the summer months and as early as 3pm in the winter months. For your personal safety please do not visit when it is dark as there is no street lighting in the vicinity of the castle.

• The use of drones for filming and photography is strictly forbidden on Hopetoun Estate without prior permission.
• The castle is located on private property and anyone visiting without a ticket may be asked to leave.
• Dogs – if you are visiting with your pet, please ensure they are kept on a lead and under control at all times. Please remember to pick up any waste.
