FAQs
We are Here to Help
Are dogs allowed to visit?
Yes, all we ask is you keep them on a lead and please clean up after your dog.
How much time should I plan on spending for a visit to Midhope Castle?
Most visitors spend around 20 to 40 minutes at the castle.
Is Midhope Castle wheelchair accessible?
Parking for blue badge holders is next to the ticket hut. The road up to the castle should not be a problem for wheelchair users, however the castle courtyard is cobbled and grassed so this may prove a little more troublesome. Staff will be happy to come and tell you about any area of the castle you may be unable to access. Filming of Outlander did not take place inside. We would advise visiting early afternoon to avoid the busiest times at Midhope Castle.
Is Midhope Castle suitable for children?
As Outlander is a TV experience for adults, there is no real activities or interest for children. Children are however very welcome and do enjoy the countryside and woods around the castle. We would remind you Midhope Castle is a Tower House NOT a castle which children will fail to understand.
Can I take a Taxi to Midhope Castle?
Yes, as there is no direct public transport to the castle a taxi may seem like a good idea, BUT please arrange for your taxi/UBER to wait for you while you visit. It is VERY difficult to call an UBER/taxi from our location. We always recommend you visit with your own transport or on an organised tour. We have a list of local taxi companies but cannot guarantee that they will be available. If coming by taxi, please do so early in the day to allow for plenty of time to get picked-up.
Do you have wi-fi (mobile phone signal)?
Due to the isolated location of the castle our mobile telephone signal is very poor. We do have full fast broadband within the castle grounds which is free for ticket holders.
Is Jamie here today?
NO! But you never know, today may be your lucky day!
What happens in poor weather?
The castle is open in ALL weathers so please dress appropriately. There is very little shelter on the castle site. We may need to close at short notice following any storm warnings or heavy snow. Please check before travelling.
Can I use my drone to take pictures?
NO. Drones are not allowed without prior permission from Hopetoun Estate.
Can Midhope Castle be hired for an private event?
Of course. Please get in touch for more information. info@midhopecastle.com
Can I stay overnight?
We do not allow overnight parking or camping at Midhope Castle as we are on a private part of Hopetoun Estate. However, we do have two lovely cottages next to the castle which can be rented. Details can be found here.
Do you have toilets?
Yes, we have toilets in our farm courtyard. Please note that they are not wheelchair accessible. The nearest accessible toilet are at the New Hopetoun Garden Centre.
Is there a café / place to buy something to eat?
Yes. We offer you great coffee, cakes and savouries from our coffee trailer.
Is the information in different languages?
We are doing our best to welcome our international guests! Our welcome leaflets are currently translated in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Polish. We also have staff members who speak French, German and Spanish. General information on the castle is available in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. Our boards and QR code pages are not translated at the moment but we are happy to show you how your phone can do automatic translations.
Can I get engaged at Midhope?
Yes, you can absolutely get engaged at Midhope. If you are planning to pop the question we would advise choosing a quiet time between 11:30 am and 3:30 pm. If you would like to organise a photographer, a piper or any other surprise to make the moment even more magical, get in touch with us at info@midhopecastle.com and we can help you out.
Can I have a photoshoot?
Yes. Several professional photographers do organise photoshoots and provide costumes. If you are planning a Photoshoot, please get in touch with us at info@midhopecastle.com . There is a £50 photography fee and we strongly advise to come in our quiet time.
